The Finnish thrash metal band Amorphis released on September 26th, 2025 the new album “Borderland” via Reigning Phoenix Music.
From the song “The Circle”, we can hear that Amorphis became a more electronic, gothic, progressive and melodic band than the old wild and cold death and thrash metal beast. The epic roars of the vocalist Tomi Jotusen are the same as in the old times, but the instrumental part is more melodic than the last albums. “Dancing Shadows” is a disco dance metal song. Harder songs are “Bones” and “The Strange”. “The Tempest” is a ballad-like, very tender song. “Lights and Shadows” is one of the most wild and wonderful songs in the album. “The Lantern” is an epic biju in the style of the “Elegy” album and “Greed” song from the “Tuonela” album. “The Lantern”, “Borderline” and “Despair” are songs about Tuonela, the realm or abode of the dead in the afterlife in the ancient Finnish belief. Traditional Finnish folk melodies continue to be present throughout the album. Most of the songs are composed by Santeri Kallio except “Dancing Shadows”, “The Lantern” and “Despair”, composed by Esa Holopainen. The album artwork is created by Dutch artist Marald Van Haasteren.
The producer, mixer, and mastering engineer is Jacob Hansen. The lyricist of the album is again the long-term Amorphis friend, the poet Pekka Kainulainen.
With this album, Amorphis once again proves that the band composes quality music, regardless of style or year.
