
The Portuguese gothic metal legends Moonspell will perform in Plovdiv with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra their show “Opus Diabolicum”. The band will play well-known favorite songs. The show in Bulgaria will be on August 2nd, 2026, at the Antique Theatre of Plovdiv, organized by BGTSC. Forty-five musicans from the National Orchestra will play together with the band on stage. For the first time the band has performed “Opus Diabolicum” with the Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa (Lisbon Sinfonietta Orchestra), conducted by maestro Vasco Pearce de Azevedo at MEO Arena in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra has over a century of top achievements on the world music scene. It is a leading institute in Bulgarian cultural life. Founded in 1892 as the Royal Orchestra by the Czech conductor Josef Hochhola, the ensemble was transformed in 1945 into the National Philharmonic Orchestra to become an emblem of native classical art. Many famous conductors connected with the orchestra – Sasha Popov, Konstantin Iliev, Dobrin Petkov, Vasil Stefanov, Vladi Simeonov, Vasil Kazandjiev, Dimitar Manolov, Emil Tabakov, Yulian Kovachev and Naiden Todorov.
Many world-known musicians, both foreign and Bulgarian, have performed with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra – opera singers: Gena Dimitrova, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, Sonia Yoncheva, Alexandrina Pendachanska, Krasimira Stoyanova and Angela Georgiou; virtuoso instrumentalists: Julian Rachlin, Sarah Chang, Thomas Hampson, Yuri Bashmet, Elena Bashkirova, Tabea Zimmerman, Patricia Kopacinska, Maxim Vengerov, Svetlin Rusev and Vadim Repin.
The Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra has more than half a century of active touring activity in Europe, Asia, and North America. The institution has many prestigious awards: “Musician of the Year”, “Golden Lyre”, “Golden Quintet”, “Crystal Lyre”, “Sofia Award”, the Honorary Badge of the Sofia Municipality and the Honorary Badge of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria.
The new vision of the poster for the concert in Plovdiv is a work by Nikola Petras and is inspired by the idea for the concert and the concept album 1755 by Moonspell, which we will hear together with the best of their work.
