The supergroup’s only show in Bulgaria celebrates King Crimson’s three boldest albums from the 80s on July 9
Only one day remains until one of the most anticipated musical events in the capital’s music calendar. Tomorrow, July 9, Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture welcomes BEAT: King Crimson Celebration Show, the project that brings together on one stage Adrian Belew and Tony Levin, two of the most recognizable voices and faces from the peak period of King Crimson, guitar architect Steve Vai and Tool’s alien drummer Danny Carey. The stop in Sofia is part of a European tour that has already visited London’s Eventim Apollo, Paris’ Olympia and the amphitheater in Pompeii.
“Returning to some of my favorite music is a pleasure in itself, but in the company of this stellar lineup, I expect them to take my hat off to me!”, shares Tony Levin, bassist for King Crimson and part of the creation of the progressive band’s most influential albums – Discipline (1981), Beat (1982) and Three of a Perfect Pair (1984) in an interview.
It is these three albums that are the focus of the concert – the recordings from the early 80s, with which King Crimson expanded the boundaries of progressive rock and which, even at the time of their creation, sounded like the future. The project is officially supported by the group’s co-founder Robert Fripp, who personally chose the name BEAT as a sign of continuity, as well as by legendary drummer Bill Bruford. This is the first full-scale project since 2009, in which these compositions are performed live with Belew’s voice and guitar – a condition that King Crimson themselves set when he left.
“Crimson’s music from “1981 to 1984 created its own world — timeless, beautiful, complex, wild,” Belew says. “Our goal is to bring it back to life — for those who remember it, but also for those who have never experienced it.”
Thursday also brings another premiere for the Bulgarian audience: Danny Carey’s guest appearance with BEAT is the first opportunity to see him on stage in our country – a name that is a cult among fans of alternative and progressive metal.
The last tickets are on sale on the Ticket Station network. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the concert starts at 8:00 p.m.
